A doctor who graduated from Harvard University has gone viral after revealing how eating too little salt could be more dangerous than eating too much.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, regularly shares his experience and knowledge with his over 487,800 followers on TikTok.

He recently explained how cutting out just one ingredient for two weeks could 'reset' the body — sugar.

Now, the 42-year-old has revealed what would happen if salt was removed from our diets for the same length of time.

And he warned it could be 'extremely harmful.'

In the clip, which has racked up over 17,000 views and hundreds of likes, he explained that salt is a crucial electrolyte that helps our bodies retain water.

'Without it, you would likely experience severe dehydration [and] your blood volume will decrease significantly, leading to a drop in blood pressure,' the doctor, from California, said.

Dr. Sethi further continued that the craving for salty foods will become 'very intense.'

He also mentioned are other dangers.

He said: 'Your muscles will become very weak, you could also feel dizzy, lightheaded, and may even faint.

'On top of that, inadequate salt consumption can disrupt gut health by impairing digestion and weaken liver health by reducing essential nutrient absorption.'

Dr. Sethi ended the video with a final warning.

He added: 'While many people worry about consuming too much salt, not getting enough can be far more dangerous.

'For most people, it is important to consume about one teaspoon of sea salt each day.'

He also urged people to speak to their doctors first.

In a previous video, Dr. Sethi argued that drinking a lot of water isn't safe and can lead to a possibly deadly condition.

He said there is a condition called water intoxication, where excess water accumulates in the brain, which can be very dangerous.

'This occurs when you are low on electrolytes, particularly sodium.

'If you are exercising heavily and losing a lot of salt through sweat, drinking a large amount of water simultaneously can be risky.'

The medical term for the condition is hyponatremia, and in this case, water dilutes electrolytes, such as sodium, which can potentially lead to further dehydration.
